What “real” workplace learning looks like
Real workplace learning isn’t defined by polish. It’s defined by whether it reliably produces the outcome.
It starts with a teachable outcome, not a theme. “Cyber security awareness” is broad. “Given a suspicious email, the learner can identify risk signals and choose the correct action using the organisation’s process” is teachable.
It uses job-real scenarios. People usually fail in context, not in theory. The learning needs to reflect the messy moments where the wrong choice is easy and the consequences are real.
It includes practice that forces a decision. Not passive reading. Not passive watching. A decision, a consequence, and a second attempt with better judgement.
It provides feedback that teaches judgement. “Incorrect” is a label. Feedback should explain what was missed, why it matters, and what to look for next time.
It uses assessment that matches the risk. Sometimes a recall quiz is enough. Sometimes it’s dangerously misleading. If the real-world task is judgement-based, the assessment needs at least some judgement-based checks.
This is education, not just digital education. The standard is defensibility.
Vidversity’s point about video is right, but the real win is what sits around it

Their argument for video isn’t “make it expensive.” It’s “make it authentic, accessible, and relevant.” The case studies in the guide are a useful reminder that learners often prefer the real person in the real environment over a polished alternative.
